A History of Music in Western Culture 3/e is based on the premise that the best way to convey the history of Western music is to focus squarely on the music. Organized around a carefully selected repertory of works, this text integrates the requisite names, dates, and concepts around specific compositions. Once familiar with a representative body of music, students can better grasp the evolution of musical style and music's changing uses within the Western tradition. Even more importantly, they will have a sound basis from which to explore other musical works and repertories. This text builds its narrative around the core repertory represented in the Anthology of Scores and the corresponding sets of compact discs.

I bought this book new for my music history class last year. Sure, as the complete package of CDs, anthologies, and this textbook can add up to be really expensive, I am just talking about the textbook as it stands alone.

the book is in great condition! Doesn’t looks like a used one: no words on it, no scratches, no breaks, no page losing. But lack of a CD that I really needed…. have to borrow one. Thanks for the good book!

I’ve actually enjoyed reading this text. Some nice side stories to go along with the times and composers. Granted I like history and I like music… So it’s hard not to like it. I give it a 4 star rating because I hate paying for college textbooks. I always feel ripped off and ashamed afterwards…

This book was required for a class. It’s well written and interesting. Must be used with accompanying CD’s and annotated scores (sold separately) for best use. I was very surprised to have ordered a paperback version but received a hardback copy!

Have been using this series or books for quite some time. The series works well together. All the books together are quite expensive. Bought used, arrived quickly, packaged in soft packaging.

This is an easy-read and user friendly text. Explanations and definitions are clear. Composers’ biographies are well summarized. I especially like how the text refers to the CD set.

You can just buy the used version as opposed to buying the new like I did. If you are required to have the cd’s that’s insane because they cost WAY too much money.
