The most beautiful textbook

I used this textbook for two semesters straight and it was well worth the money. First off, it said I had purchased the book “USED”, but upon receiving it in the mail, it was in near perfect condition, I cant even remember seeing an imperfection on it at all. Secondly, the contents of the textbook were so gorgeously put together and presented to us readers, that I can not see myself ever selling this book back or getting rid of it. Not only does it explain, in depth, the origins and developments of different music, but it includes art from the eras as well. The art work is so striking and really helps you put yourself into the book and understand the history more, it a perfect addition to any personal library!

When I taught courses in music history, this is the text I preferred. I cut my teeth on the one written by Donald Jay Grout in the 1960s; however, it was dull reading, few illustrations, and ignored the varied musical contributions of the 20th century. In this new edition, Hanning continues to expand and refine her command of the subject. The major points of compositions and life histories of key composers, along with a masterful handling of correlation of the arts, makes this text valuable today and a useful reference guide in the future.

This was required for Music History 1 and 2, but it is interesting book for others to read, also, especially if one of your children is a music major. For a textbook this is quite enjoyable reading and helps us to be more knowledgeable in family discussions or hearing recitals, etc. You definitely enjoy music more when you have more understanding of its development.

This is one of the most beautiful books I own. The wonderful color plates, the personal stories of the composers, the timeline of what else was happening in the world combine to make this a treasure.

Great book. older edition

Great book. older edition, but like it says…concise. Although there is a some minor history left out, it covers the major “trends” in music history. Its just too bad that our musical ancestors didn’t have a way (other than oral traditions) to preserve real ancient music history.

I have been using Hanning’s Concise History Vol. 2 in my Music History classes. I have found it an excellent tool. She uses standard excerpts often throughout the text with original manuscript citings and easily understood analyses. Each of the chapters begins with an excellent overview and ends with a review. Both are a strong broad cross section of historic context. Excellent period artwork in full color is included.
