If you’re someone who, like myself, has read most of the popular literature defining the constitution/designation of true Film Noir – but yearns for a fresh perspective – you’ll find it among these pages. In the concise summations of his some-200 chosen titles, David Hogan has managed to convey original, thought-provoking insights, while successfully challenging many self-conceived guidelines established by some of the recognized “experts” on the subject. Hogan is able to inform and educate his reader without trying too hard to sound intelligent. He’s quite adept at explaining the process of set design, camera angles, lighting and many other facets. At worst, you’ll learn some things about Film Noir that you may not have already known.

Takes a long time to read Hahahahahahah

I had one problem with the book. Usually I can read a book in two or three days, but this one took me a month to read.

EXCELLENT ADDITION TO NOIR LIBRARY!

There have been a lot of books written over the last couple decades covering Film Noir. I have at least 50+ and most of them are quite good, and David Hogan’s new entry goes right to the top of the list alongside Silver and Ursini’s FILM NOIR READER series and Eddie Muller’s DARK CITY and NOIR CITY series.

perfect condition. Film noir lovers

Just as described, perfect condition. Film noir lovers: get this. Easier on the spirit than some of the more academic research, yet extremely well researched and not condescending at all.

Highly recommended for enjoyable reading and as reference material

Hogan provides insightful and well written descriptions and analyses of all the major and many minor films from the world of noir. With each chapter I find myself having to put down the book and search my library or Amazon Prime for a particular film. Highly recommended for enjoyable reading and as reference material.

One of the best Noir books

Great book! Very interesting behind the scenes information. It’s the first book I’ve read that gives credit where credit is due – to the cameramen and writers. I’m tired of the books that make it sound like the directors do all the work.

Great book!

This is an excellent and entertaining book. Film Noir is my favourite movie genre, so as soon as I received my package from Amazon I quickly started reading it. It is well written, moves nicely from one movie to the next, and has good photos. The selection of movies in the book rate in my top list of great Film noir, I highly recommend this book to both seasoned noir fans or newly interested parties to the genre. A wonderful and enduring chapter of cinema.
