Talk About No BS!

I’m always looking for, and often failing to find, books like this one Chris Grosso spilled out so effortlessly (well, it reads so easy it seems effortless, anyway!). It’s a raw and personal account of his journey through addiction, recovery and enlightenment with simple, honest and logical tips on how to be more at ease with your own spirituality and in touch with your Self. Folks like us (tattoo-covered, foul-mouthed outcasts) are often given the eye-roll when we talk about how we’re “not religious, but spiritual” and if we find something that speaks to us, we are also often made to be shunned by other believers. Grosso reminds you that it’s okay and that you’re not alone.

I finished this book in two days and it was a perfect read – it truly has something for everyone. One of my favorite parts of this book is that there are lots of practices you can implement now into your life – including meditations (I loved the 32-part body meditation I learned), opening yourself up to new music (the author provides references so you don’t have to go searching for your own), visiting sacred places, and more. There were some things that immediately called my name and others that didn’t. But, that’s exactly the point the author is trying to make through his vignettes and offerings. This spiritual trip is yours to take – any way you like it.

I would like to preface my review by saying I’m not a good writer, I have dyslexia. I find it challenging to read books. I’ve been listening to Chris and his wonderful interviews and decided to give this a try based on his no-nonsense style. He’s the kind of person that when you’re listening to him you feel like you have known him all your life. At least that’s my own experience. I was able to read this book with no problem because it wasn’t filled with a lot of complex details that are often written in styles that are to intricate for my mind to comprehend when reading. Chris is a true inspiration on many levels. He is very forthright and direct about his experience. I appreciate how much he has grown and how he has been able to face his life challenges and come out as an inspiration to others. He also puts some great recommendations in the book for people who are new to meditation and/or looking for spiritual music to listen to. I had never heard of MC Yogi and I’m not a huge hip-hop fan, I gave the music a chance and love it!

I think this is a great book for people who are new to spirituality or who previously haven’t been interested in it, or maybe felt excluded/like they couldn’t belong. Chris shows that no matter what you look like, dress like, what your past is, or what kind of music you listen to, the paths of spirituality are open and available to you.

Huge applause for this honest, insightful book. Just right: gives spiritual breathing room for you, whatever your path is.

There are so many of us that don’t know “the way” or claim to know it. But we know this: the path as described by most self-proclaimed teachers is simply not our path. If you’ve ever shaken your head at false gurus, crooked rabbis, or horny priests, wondering WTF, Indie Spiritualist is for you. There’s a reason this book is taking the planet by storm and pelting it mercilessly with love bombs. It’s because the planet needs it, and the time is right.

INDIE SPIRITUALIST is quenching a thirst that is so prevalent in our world today; for authentic, no-BS* spirituality without the dogma that exists in the hierarchical and patriarchal religions of our history. It’s a great, down-to-earth account of the truth of the author’s own experiences and offers helpful, practical insights and practices. “We read to know that we’re not alone.” said C.S. Lewis, and Chris Grosso shares with us the dark nights of his soul, and his journey to how he found peace, freedom and liberation. I feel gratitude that he’s shared his journey with us.

Transformative.

Grosso has written a very readable and useable book on finding your way in the complex and confusing world of spiritualism. He writes of his own dark times and his own ceaseless searching for meaning in a world of loss and heartache. In clear, everyday language he teaches the reader to find meaning and purpose in every activity we take part in every day.

This book took me by surprise

I am person in long term recovery from a lot of addictions and in the process of writing my own visual memoirs; pending completion and publication. I read this book during a time I thought I was somehow immune to some of the things Chris talked about (no surprise my ego would do this), and then he says, “let me be the first to throw myself under the bus…” This book is very straightforward and I believe, relates to all humans on some level. Ever since reading it and highlighting parts, I’ve been sharing parts by reading them my clients to assist him/her through their own process of recovery as I am also a certified drug and alcohol counselor. I love it all and it is what it is!

An amazing, real life book about one man’s incredible, against all odds, journey towards spirituality. Read it.

I loved this book. It was incredibly well written, I read it within hours of purchasing it. It was humorous, and filled with light, even in the darkest places the author goes. Chris Grosso fills you with hope and possibility in this brutally honest tale. And he offers meditation techniques from his own journey to his readers to try, while encouraging them to have their own unique and authentic experiences. I can’t say enough good stuff about this book.
