§ Matthias Grünewald’s birth name was Mathis Gothardt. The name Grünewald was fabricated by a 17th century biographer.
§ Grünewald’s first documented painting is the Mocking of Christ, 1503. It reveals the skills of a young man just becoming a master painter.
§ In 1509, Grünewald became a court painter to the elector of Mainz, the archbishop Uriel von Gemmingen.
§ In 1515, Grünewald received his most important commission, to paint the wings of the Isenheim Altarpiece at the Antonite monastery.
