This book was not so much written as constructed, somewhat like a painting. It is a collection of teaching notes from nearly thirty years, each note created in the crucible of an art class. A comment from one of his readers: Ryno Swart has written a book as magical as the most successful painting . . . it says what needs to be said-no more, no less. It gets to the heart of the matter and is peppered with pithy and relevant notes such as "Half the skill of painting is leaving it alone" "You can't make a painting work; you can only allow it to work" "A painting must be conducted like a military campaign; planned and organised and strategised" This is a book that should not lie on a coffee table or grace a bookshelf. This is a book that should be propped up in your studio or wherever you work and should soon become spotted and splashed with paint"

This is a wonderful book “Painting in Oils” by a gifted artist from South Africa. Figurative work that is lyrical and abstracted, fresh and alive.

He has put into practical steps all that makes a painting into a masterpiece. I recommend this book to anyone looking for the real thing…paintings that move you and your viewer.

This looks like a very enjoyable book, but it was difficult to read it on my kindle. Many of the lighter words and images faded out.

As a professional artist , I continuously refer to books by masters. This is one of the top 10 books on my shelf, and the most re-read. I had the pleasure of studying with Ryno in Venice in Oct 2015. Those 10 days changed the way I paint, and think about painting. Ryno is a GENIUS, an intense, profound, hardcore teacher and painter. This book is concise, inspiring, beautiful and personal. It is one approach to painting. There may be millions of other approaches, but these concepts rock my world, daily.
This is excellent

Ryno Swart is a master of painting in oils. He spent many years in France, Greece, Italy and Holland and now has a delightful gallery on the main street in Simon’s Town, where he also gives workshops, and this book is a masterly presentation of his teaching notes.
