The history of painting between 1848 and 1914 through one of the most beautiful collections of pictures in the world. Published for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the museum at the start of 2012, the volume presents 300 works in an order that is both chronological and thematic, thereby offering a comprehensive overview of the history of painting of the period, with the didactic intent of rendering it accessible to the widest possible public. Built up over time through purchases by the state, donations and bequests from artists, collectors, and patrons, and also thanks to an active acquisitions policy, the Musée d’Orsay’s collection of pictures today constitutes an exceptional holding represented by the greatest names and schools of painting between 1848 and 1914, such as symbolism (Moreau, Puvis de Chavannes, Redon), realism (Courbet, Fantin-Latour), the Barbizon school (Corot, Millet, Rousseau), impressionism (Caillebotte, Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley), post impressionism (Seurat, Gauguin, van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec), and the Nabis (Bonnard, Denis, Vuillard). For its new hanging in the picture galleries, the Musée d’Orsay is highlighting its extraordinary masterpieces to offer the public an increasingly complete yet fresh survey of that fruitful and varied era, one of the most creative and abundant in the history of art.

To my knowledge this is the best recent book on the paintings in the D’Orsay. Finally a a good catalogue with excellent plates of all the paintings in this wonderful museum. Unlike many of it’s predecessors including many of the books offered in the museums gift shop this new book on The D’orsay is comprehensive with very high quality color balanced reproductions of all the paintings.I know the works in this museum quite well and I can say with confidence this is the first book I have seen in 20 years of looking that represents beautifully the extraordinary paintings this museum has to offer.

This Book is Spectacular!

I purchased this as a birthday gift for my girlfriend who is an artist and has been to the Musee d’Orsay. It has one of her most favorite paintings, which was missing in another book she had looked at of the Musee d’Orsay. After having read the reviews, I decided to take a chance and order this book. I did not regret it. Not only are the pages thick and high quality, but the reprints are as good as you will get for reproductions. The only way to get better is the originals. Just to illustrate this, my girlfriend was slowly leafing through and she made a comment that you can even see the cracks in the paint. If you are looking for a book on this museum and you can only get one, this would be the one you would want to get.

After visiting d’Orsay, this is the only book that will do your memories justice. Beautiful, vivid colors to the prints compared to others I’ve seen. Bound well, and actually has great written content as well.

A beautiful book…

I first became aware of this book at the Musee d’Orsay while roaming the bookstore…but the text was in French, so I resisted buying it. But I did spend 20 minutes or so looking through the book after having spent hours walking through the museum. When I came home, I was sorry that I had not bought the book so I took a chance and looked for it on Amazon…much to my delight, there was an English version.

The reproductions are good, the one nice thing is there are none of them on the fold, which is great!
