I’m am an older retired guy that recently stumbled onto Swan Lake much by accident. After reading several reviews from this website, I’ve come to believe that many reviewers are caught up in the natural feeling that the only right way to perform Swan Lake is in the manner of the first performance they really loved. It seems that most people are susceptible to this natural emotional inclination. However, after watching several other performances on the internet, I’m happy to say that this will probably be the most beautiful performance I will ever buy off the internet.

Finest Swan Lake performance ever recorded

This is a truly magnificent version of Swan Lake, because of the stunning quality of the dancing, and the uniqueness of the production. Gillian Murphy and Angel Corella dance with complete technical perfection in their roles as Odette/Odile and Prince Siegfried. More importantly, they act as well as they dance. That’s often missing in ballet today, as technique is now worshiped at the expense of making an audience feel that the roles they are playing are of real people. Frankly, I have not seen anyone dance this ballet so well since I saw Fonteyn and Nureyev dance Swan Lake live in the 1960s. Young dancers can learn a lot watching this performance about the subtleties that make ballet a great art form.

I purchased this DVD last year, after renting it from Netflix. My three year old daughter watched a bit of it and fell in love. After keeping it from Netflix for over a month, we decided to go ahead and buy it. My daughter still loves it so, needless to say, I have watched this DVD many, many times! Fortunately, I love it and it has stood up to repeated viewings.

This is my favorite version of Swan Lake

This is my favorite version of Swan Lake. I love the introduction by Caroline Kennedy, with the remarks of John F. Kennedy about the arts in America. The intermission commentary helps clarify the story, with the artists describing what motivates these characters. It’s a fairy tale but as Angel Corella eloquently explains it is a very human love story. Gillian Murphy is astonishing. The transformation of the Evil Sorcerer from an actual green monster into “a charming man” in rich royal purple robes, irresistibly handsome, is brilliantly done. It’s a joy to watch.

Wonderful Gillian Murphy as Odile (and Odette…)

Wonderful Odile… and wonderful Odette… But Odile…. Gillian Murphy did such a performance as Odile that You cannot find anywhere the same. Amazing how much she communicates magnetic attraction, and besides her perfect technical… and her beauty. The other performers are amazing, first Angel Corella and so, Marcelo Gomez .

This is the closest I will ever get to “royalty” and a ballet, and I am very happy to own this DVD. I was lucky enough to get this off my wish list using points as well. I first saw this performance via Netflix DVD delivery and loved the music, the costumes and performances. Couldn’t wait to own it as well. If you can only get one ballet DVD, this has to be one of the best in over all production value and value for your dollars. If any ballet fan on your list hasn’t seen it this, it would be a great gift. Also, I think this would be a fine intro to ballet for children. The music is top notch and they will have a leg up in being a bit more cultured in the fine arts. Can’t say enough good things about this selection — I’m thrilled to have this as part of my collection.

A Total Thumbs Up!

I first saw this on YouTube. At first, I was put off by the height differentials of the principals. It took me awhile to get over that bias. Once I did, it became more enjoyable with each viewing, to the point where I had to own the DVD.

This was such a beautiful rendition of the ballet. Angel was a perfect Siegfried. He’s such a strong dancer and his emotional transitions of the character are effortless. Odette matched his technique step
