A Reference Book That’s Also Enjoyable Reading Too!

At this price, this is the best book bargain I’ve seen in years! The book is HUGE! 1743 pages! It’s easy to follow along with the well spaced entries, and the book covers a large assortment of operas. The lyrics are shown in the opera’s original language, and the English translation is directly beside that original language in what looks to be a line-by-line format. A brief summary of the opera’s plot is at the start of the libretto, along with other pertinent information about the opera. Now I know why so many of my Italian-speaking opera-going friends were giggling during some of Rossini’s opera’s…Rossini’s.cute little jokes interspersed in the libretto! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning more about operas. I know that I will be enjoying the next opera I will see more than any in the past. The only suggestion I might make in the book’s format is that I wish the author had instructed the printers to print the first foreign language words of the most famous arias in the opera in bold print. Although I know the famous aria from I Pagliacci, not in English but only as “Vesti la giubba,” it took me a while to find it in the Italian language column. All in all, I am most pleased that I found this book.

Very pleased and surprised at its good condition, and it was specialy valuable to me in that I could while listening to an opera follow it in its original language while at the same time understanding the plot and dialoge in English.I have a large selection of Opera C/Ds and tapes which have now become that much easier to listen to and enjoy.

I have found some inconsistencies in the book when compared to other versions of the same libretto, but overall a convenient resource for some of the world’s best-known operas.
