What Do I Do Now? The Secrets of a Midlife Reboot "The Real Brass Ring" takes "The Secret" on a high-speed road test in a tale of midlife transformation in the real, flesh-and-blood world of contemporary Chicago. It is the story of a "midlife reboot," a raw, unfiltered journey of enlightenment that illustrates a woman's daunting personal reinvention and the rewards of fearlessly pursuing a life's true calling. After a jolting encounter with internationally known psychic and author Sonia Choquette, Dianne Bischoff James is forced to face the truth about her life. Sonia's words cut like a knife: "Dianne, you are a talented writer, healer, teacher and performer. But sadly your life is heading down the wrong path. Your brass ring is coming by and you need to grab it before it's too late. You have modeled yourself after your parents' desires. You are completely stuck in the make-believe role of being a 'good girl.' You live with depression because nothing about your life is your own. Fix your ways or soon it will be too late." Dianne had achieved an impressive education, an accomplished entrepreneurial career, a busy family life and social status; yet somehow, she had completely missed "the real brass ring." Although she had had a perfectly "traditional" background, her marriage was a sham, career uninspiring, health failing and self-esteem and spirituality non-existent. At 38, it was as if she had awakened to a nightmare: she had been living a profound lie. Finding herself completely off-track, Dianne openly bares her soul and utilizes the metaphysical principles of "The Secret" to set out to change every aspect of her existence. She insists that she is worthy of an authentic romantic relationship and initiates the break-up of her marriage, with three children in tow; and dives into midlife "cougar" dating, including a close call with a charming but dangerously abusive alcoholic. By experimenting with the Law of Attraction, she also launches the acting career she had always dreamed of as a child and surprises even herself with success in an extremely competitive arena. Gradually, yet boldly, Dianne also faces other critical issues, including physical afflictions, a terrifying financial recession and the death of a loved one – removing each daunting roadblock one by one and manifesting a newly-created self. "I'd approached every change as a free fall, diving through the air and grabbing at brass rings along the way," Dianne writes. "I'd made more mistakes than I could even count, but I also absorbed the painful, yet innately valuable teachings Now, I had what I wanted all along, emotional peace, love, a uniquely sculpted family unit, an outlet for my creativity and a new life in hand This was the picture Sonia painted for me on my 38th birthday – it just took me over a decade to erect the living model from the shadows." By chronicling her own personal reinvention with grit, humor, incisiveness and compassion in "The Real Brass Ring," Dianne provides the inspiration and passion others need to reclaim their authentic self.

I was fortunate to be able to attend the first book signing and see Dianne in person. It is the first ‘book’ book I have purchased in years, but I wanted Dianne’s signature, which now makes my copy priceless in that respect alone. I won’t be lending it out, so you’d best just go ahead and buy your own.

Dianne Bischoff James tells a remarkable and inspiring story that offers insights, aha moments and inspiration in each chapter. Dianne tells a story that kept me turning the pages to find out not only what happened, but what she learned and the positive changes she made along her journey of self discovery. I found myself taking a lot of mental notes as I read the book. The author is real and honest and doesn’t sugarcoat the steps she took to change her life and get to a better place, and I commend her for her bravery and honesty, as well as her storytelling abilities. Her writing style makes you feel as if you are in a conversation and she is catching you up after a long time away.

The timing of Dianne’s book coming out could not have been better. I am going through my own “transition/reboot” and even though I know I have to make significant changes in my life in order to achieve long term happiness, I was too overwhelmed to know how or what to do. A friend of mine had recommended I read “The Real Brass Ring”. This book is such an inspiring story of perseverance. It is told in a beautifully candid fashion and tugs at the heart strings as we travel with Dianne through many trials and difficult life challenges. Some of the challenges were so similar to what I am facing I found myself using this as a “how to” book and couldn’t wait to get to the end of the chapter to see what I should do. I have so many pages marked to go back and either remind myself of the motivational quotes or to develop another soul searching list I need to complete. It is a quick and easy read which left me both motivated and inspired to not only take the next step but to figure out what the next step is. I would highly recommend this book to all audiences.

This will be the third review of a book written by a friend of mine & because you know the person, it makes it just a tad more difficult to write the review because you’d like to keep the friendship so, you need to write a positive review! Concerning my friend Dianne Bischoff James’ book “The Real Brass Ring” that will not be a problem. It is an entertaining read filled with quotes from all the self help books she has read: a veritable Who’s Who of the New Age type of books & you can hardly stop reading the book once you start it!

a remarkably compelling book

Dianne Bischoff has written an alternately lighthearted and sad, altogether touching tour of her life experience. I started turning the pages and did not want to put it down. It’s an often brave self-examination that causes us not to empathize so much as identify – it’s about her, but it’s really about the unexpected turns all of our lives inevitably take. As I read I found myself feeling like a confidant, but also felt something more. I could see the patterns of my own experience invisibly interwoven with the honest details of her life changes. It’s one of those rare books that reminds and reassures us that we aren’t the only ones contending with the plot twists in life. I recommend it unreservedly.

I highly recommend this book

This is an entertaining and inspiring book that led me through Dianne’s personal struggles in her work, marriage and family. Despite the profound sadness of some of her situations, she manages to persevere. It is the honesty in her self-examination practices that is intriguing. Sharing the analysis of her spiritual and physical challenges with candor and occasional humor kept me turning the pages. Inspirational references throughout the book are rich and thought provoking. This book is a “prompt” to consider looking at my own struggles a little differently. I highly recommend this book.

I finished this book in two days. I couldn’t put it down. It’s one of those books you’ll read, then wish someone had handed it to you 20 years ago. Dianne’s story is sure to resonate with anyone feeling the frustrations and anxiety of struggling with where they want to be in life. It brought me to the realization that my life is in need of a major overhaul from the inside out if I want to experience the happiness and fulfillment which I desire. Bless you Dianne for sharing your experience with us!

Inspiring and funny. Eat Pray Love meets Reality, and shows that the only thing stopping you is you!

I remember reading “Eat Pray Love” and watching “Under the Tuscan Sun” and being annoyed by the combination of what I saw as relatively minor midlife crises and huge wads of available money to solve them. Sure these women had marriages that needed to end, and yes they had lost their way but they had loving supportive friends, they were in the right careers, and when they were ready to find their way they had no children to consider and enough money to pursue their long neglected dreams immediately.

The Real Brass Ring by Dianne Bischoff James is the story of the author’s journey after given some harsh truth about her life from a psychic. Not expecting to drastically change so many things in her life at the age of 38, it wasn’t easy, but was full of necessary changes to help the author discover her true life course.
