The Writer’s Book of Inspiration: Quotes on Writing and the Literary Life is sooooooo much more than a book of quotes. It will inspire new ideas and motivate you to action. If even one quote moves you as much as many have moved me then the book is worth buying.

I LOVE this book! Beyond inspirational, each turn of the page left me reeling, chuckling, eager to click to the next. Ms. Gunning has assembled the most informed, a propos, pithy quotations for the many moods a writer experiences in this deliciously rewarding collection, celebrating the work and struggle of a singularly solitary profession, with alacrity, brevity, and wit. High praise!

“Writing is love. It’s the beating heart pulsing on paper. It is music, magic, and mystery.” These are Stephanie Gunning’s own words, from the preface of her new book, “Inspiration for Writers: Quotes on Writing and the Literary Life.” These carefully chosen quotes are by writers whose literary accomplishments span every era and genre: from Shakespeare to Dr. Seuss, Jane Austen to J.K. Rowling, George Orwell to Groucho Marx, Maya Angelou to Michael Crichton. Although I recognized a few of the quotes, most were new to me and made me feel like I’d discovered hidden treasure.

A lot of quotes

The book was pretty nice. There were some pretty solid quotes in it, like “You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you,” by Ray Bradbury. Overall, the quotes are inspiring or made me laugh. Some I didn’t quite understand. The writer gave a brief introduction and sounded like a decent author. I can’t give this book five stars because it is just a collection of quotes from other people, but I enjoyed reading it, for whatever that is worth.

I have not come across a book for writers that contains so many inspirational, motivational and funny quotes that you can use every day to inspire your writing. It’s simplicity makes it so attractive to the writer’s soul.

The Writer’s Book of Inspiration inspires this writer and will inspire you

As a lover of reading, I am fascinated with what lifts others off their arses, what makes them hoist that 100 pound pencil and cease being one who talks and thinks about writing and lets the movement of pen on paper transform them in to actual writers. There is an intimate tone to this book that makes me feel it was compiled just for me. As a leader of a writing workshop, I can see using these quotes as prompts and jump starts for writing experiences. And as one who moves that pen across pages, marking miles with ink and letters, I relish the small portals each of these inspirations offers. One day, Beatrix Potter, the next Stephen King. Stephanie has collected an abundant array of invitations to write and write some more.

Handy and helpful for writers

The Writer’s Book of Inspiration delivers on the promise. Like many writers, I am intrigued by quotes from beloved authors, and this is one of the best collections of inspiring words I’ve ever read–all in one book. Entertaining, insightful, and inspiring, this little book of quotes should be on every writer’s Kindle or bookshelf for those moments when words fail or just for pure pleasure. Writers who embrace free flow writing will appreciate the uncategorized flow of page-to-page quotations, while those who favor structure might be aching for some sort of heading to direct them. But, every writer will surely find pleasure, value, and comfort in reading the reflections of those who have taken the writing journey in a memorable way.

Finally Going to Write That Novel!

I’m the author or co-author of eleven published non-fiction works and have several million books in print, but it has take The Writer’s Book of Inspiration to give me the push I need to throw commercial potential and caution to the wind (pun intended) and finish one of the several half-completed novels I have in progress. Thanks, Stephanie, for so cleverly putting together the words that inspire me to do what my heart has always desired.
