“A work that contains information on all branches of knowledge or treats comprehensively a particular branch of knowledge usually in articles arranged alphabetically often by subject”. That is the definition for encyclopedia established in Webster Dictionary. Uncloudy Day is not just an encyclopedia of Gospel Music, but the greatest treasure of information contained in one book. You will read narratives that chronicles the lives behind the music. You will read about very renowned household names, to some not so well recognized, but all have helped to make gospel music what it is today. I am sure you will be encouraged when you read the stories behind the celebrated performers in this book. Also included is a Glossary of Terms, Gospel Trivia, Charts and a great deal more. As a Gospel Radio Announcer I highly recommend this book. If I had to put it in one word it would be “Astounding”. Bil Carpenter has produced a MASTERPIECE.

The critical reviews of this book are valid. Don’t think of it as an “encyclopedia” in the classic sense but rather one man’s subjective compilation of black gospel. Maybe the book should have been titled “Profiles in Gospel”. That said, the author knows his gospel – especially from the 1980’s to current. You may not agree with his personal assessment of some artists but that is part of the fun. It was a fascinating read that I kept going back to. It was great to have all these behind the scenes stories in one neat volume. Some of it is quite courageous to include in a volume about religious music. All of my favorite gospel artists were in there. A comprehensive book about every significant black gospel artist since Thomas Dorsey was bound to leave some less than satisfied. I give the author a lot of credit for such an ambitious undertaking.

This is one of the best documentaries on traditional gospel music that I have ever seen. It gives you full performances instead of short little teasers, which I hate. There are rare performances in the documentary that I have never seen before. I first saw this on Netflix and I just had to have a copy for myself.
