Do not let this small (134 page) workbook fool you. It packs a lot of content. The lay-out is simplistic with clear instructions and definitions on each page. Most 3rd graders can do this on their own.Basically, it is a lesson plan already done for you. There is no need to plan ahead or look up other information. This book guides you through the writing process. The content builds gradually, consistently and thoroughly, and is the foundation for upper level writing. It has 6 chapters that are already divided into lessons. It covers all writing from simple sentences, short paragraphs, friendly letters, compare and contrast, to narrative and descriptive writing and more. The basic lay-out is a lesson with a definition or information, an example of the how to use the new information, followed immediately with a practice area.

My son finally “gets it” as to how to write decent paragraphs after going halfway through this book. ALSO a great way to practice cursive.

I am a huge fan of these Spectrum notebooks..As a homeschool mom, I purchased these as a supplement to our curriculum. This Writing notebook is a wonderful book of lessons that goes back to the basics!! Teaching kids how to set up paragraphs, start out with a main idea, use sentences that support your main idea, and draw it all up in a conclusion.. The best thing I like about this book though, is how it starts showing kids how to “build” their story or their paragraph into “building blocks.” They can physically see it in pictures how one builds upon the other and so on, and so forth.. The beginning of the book starts out very, very basic..(Picking out the main idea of a story) Then showing them how to write details, (all this is illustrated to make it easier) One page if I remember correctly uses a hamburger so they can understand: (the buns- the introduction and conclusion, and the patty, lettuce,tomato- all the supporting details) That’s exactly what I mean about illustrating so that they can understand in “kid terms!” I love SPECTRUM, and will be buying more subjects I’m sure!!

My son always does the minimum when it comes to writing, so helping him expanding his writing has been a challenge. We just started doing this book and it has come off a good start!
It’s a good workbook, but…..

In all fairness, this is a good workbook. I bought it for my son, to help him with his writing skills. He is in third grade and they are doing more paragraphs, short stories, etc. He is very analytical, so if he is writing about known facts he does great. However, he was having a hard time figuring out how or what to write when he was allowed more creative liberties. My only complaint, and this is more so my fault, is that although he is in third grade, he is working at a fifth grade level in his curriculum in school; the first third to half of this book was too basic to really challenge him; if he is not challenged he looses his focus rather quickly. That is the only reason I did not give this five stars.
Very Good Work Book

I think that the workbook is awesome. Its fun, and it breaks down the process of writing very good. My son is in 3rd grade and is far from the best writer and this book has been very helpful for him and writing techniques!
