Recently I bought several of Spectrum Math, Language Art, and Writing books for my son, so I will write one review and post it for all of them.

This is an excellent basic Writing course for a 5th or 6th grader. There are several units covering description, essays, and reports. Each unit has several sub-units which lead the student through a more intricate look at some writing techniques. Then, the student is walked step by step through the assigned paper, with plenty of writing space for each phase of the process. The final drafts are written or typed on separate paper, though. The book is clear and well organized and with some parental encouragement and oversight, and the use of a good Thesaurus and good proofreading by the parent, this book can be a complete homeschool Writing course for 5th or 6th grade.

I have not yet started Grade 6 Spectrum Writing, but am using Grades 5 and 7 with my children this year. I like them so much I know for sure I’ll be doing Grades 6 and 8 next year. My children are turning out wonderful writing since they have started using Spectrum. The directions are clear and easy to follow. Even my 5th grader, who has been a reluctant writer up to this point, is writing great things.

I have found that this is a great resource for my stepson. The lessons are broken down to manageable “bites” so as not to overwhelm with narratives that help both me and him in working on / reviewing the work. Plus, he actually seems to enjoy the challenge each lesson presents to him. A good supplement, especially if you are prepping your child for the next grade.

This is a good book. We’re just not using it as much as I thought we would. Maybe at a later time we will use it more.

Good book. My son did a page a day during the summer to get him ready for 6th grade. Meanest mom ever!
