This is a fantastic book. I got it for my son. It’s a little above his writing level, but I’m sure it’ll be very handy when he gets there. It seems like it’s more for the junior high crowd. Until then, Ill be reading it!

Great book for helping kids (and adults) write better. I created a companion guide to go with it for my 10th grade homeschooler to use for his creative writing class.

I teach writing to English Language Learners, adults, and find this book very helpful. I have also written, obviously as a writing teacher, and find it helpful. I have read it to/with my 9 year old daughter, and find it helpful. Although a book about writing – it is more. It is a readable book about writing; not some dull textbook.

The essentials of writing in one little book

Frankly, I bought this book with some doubt in my mind. While I do think Mrs. Levine is a great author, I also think there are other great authors and why should she be the one to promote a writing book out of everyone else?

So much more than I expected!

I ordered this book for two reasons: 1. I love to write, and 2. my daughter loves to write. Minimally, I hoped to encourage her to continue developing her talent as she grew older. The book arrived, and I wanted to see what I could gain from reading it. In a way, I was saddened. Not because of the content or because of the material, but because I wish someone had said all of these things to me when I was young. The one key phrase “Save what you wrote” is everywhere in this work, and is now something I am keeping in my heart. My daughter will be reading this book starting today, and I am waiting impatiently to discover her reaction not only to the material but to the wonderful exercises throughout. Don’t let its slim size fool you – this is an amazing piece of work!

Great for Those Daunted by Writing Their First Page.

Writing can seem impossible to start. Where to begin? Like learning to ride a bike, this book starts the reader off easy, with a quick exercise at the end of each short chapter. By the book’s end anyone daunted by writing their first short story will be ready to dive in. I highly recommend this for middle school students to find those bitten by the writing bug and equip them for an exciting future in creating something all on their own.
