Great overview of PB writing – particularly useful for revision

This book is an overview but it is an extremely useful roadmap to writing/revising a picture book. I particularly liked her chapter on making a physical dummy during the revision process. My one gripe would be that there are several typos in the book – it could have gone through another editing pass. However, none of that diminishes the actual usefulness of the book. (A suggestion – if this book is updated, in addition to correcting the typos, I would strongly recommend using different cover art because the existing artwork makes the book look very old-fashioned. I actually passed over the book for many years because of that. Fortunately, I followed the recommendation of a fellow writer recently and read it.)

If you don’t have access to a picture book writing class, or even if you do, this is the book for you. Step by step, Ann Whitford Paul leads one on the journey of writing a picture book, from how to generate ideas to how to target publishers and promote your book. Each chapter ends with an exercise for the budding writer to try on their manuscript. A couple chapters into the book I thought I should takes notes. By the end I figured out that this is a book to own. It’s full of resources, tips and ideas that I’ll return to again and again while writing.

This is easily the best book on writing picture books that I have ever read. The author is detailed and precise concerning all that goes into creating a great picture book. Not only does she show how to write and rewrite, but she also lets the reader know that writing a great book is not as easy as it may look to the casual reader. She also shares the dedication that a budding writer must have to succeed as well as what is expected after a publisher accepts the book for publication. A terrific book! Delivery was prompt and the book was in perfect condition. 5 stars

There are many books about how to write for children, but most of them try to cover board books to young adult novels, even how to illustrate. Thankfully, this book focuses on picture book writing and does an excellent job of it.

I’ve been attending a forum in Julie Hedlund’s 12 X 12 group (an extraordinary group of children’s book writers / illustrators / published or not). We been diving in, chapter by chapter and the experience is bar none. Thank you for making it so clear and non-scary! ~Yvette
