This is a text book for some college courses teaching picture book writing and illustrating. There is a lot of good information. Although I’m not inspired by the images, I do understand the lessons in the book and have learned something from it.

A detailed and highly comprehensive coverage of the stages and design elements required for picture book writers/illustrators working towards a finished product – for both beginners and professionals. Perhaps a bit dated for those involved in computer art, but helpful information and strategies regarding preparation for publication. Perhaps a follow-up How -To, focusing on more contemporary technical procedures, would be useful.

I found this book to go far beyond what I expected. It covers the author’s creative processes, step by step. Shulevitz details the most basic of ingredients of his visualizations and illustrates how he develops them into his finished creations. I have authored several books, and now am beginning to feel that I might try to illustrate them.

Excellent book that really feels like I am taking a course with Uri Shulevitz! I have not finished the very end of the book yet, but I am looking forward to the lessons on artist techniques. The book is a great read as well, with excellent examples and pictures.

This book has great tips on illustrating children’s picture books. It’s difficult for me to duplicate pictures, but the tip with the tracing paper make it easier. Plus it shows how to go from the most simplest drawing to the most difficult.

I would recommend this book to any newbie or even someone in the biz. The book breaks down the ins and out of creating a children’s book. It is very detail in its method. I enjoyed the examples as they brought out important pointers to picture book writing. This is defintely a book to have next to your desk.
